The Brontës’ Irish Connection

The Brontës’ Irish Connection

This event will explore the Irish connection of the famous Brontë literary family and stress the importance of the preservation of the Brontë legacy by Charlotte's husband, Arthur Bell Nicholls – who is sometimes referred to as Mr Charlotte Brontë.

In this talk, Dr. Maebh O’Regan will show this connection using 15 objects from the Banagher collection including Charlotte Brontë’s wedding dress, Emily Brontë’s writing desk, Branwell Brontë’s self -portrait, the Rev. Patrick Brontë’s gun, Anne Brontë’s water-colour of her dog, Arthur Bell Nicholl’s retirement pocket watch, and the Brontë children’s tiny books referred to as Juvenilia.

Using such personal objects, this talk will bring a lively and engaging personal dimension to this significant literary family.
